…Embracing the Broken Path
While each client’s experience varies, these are some things you might notice after (or while) attending therapy…
-You may feel relief having shared the details of your story in a safe place, instead of trying to ‘hold it all in’ and ignoring how much this loss or trauma has affected you.
-You may have a new understanding for how your present story is connected to your past hurts and beliefs. And because of this, you may be able to understand why some of your reactions to everyday events feel ‘out of proportion’ to the current circumstance.
-You may be able to name your emotions better, instead of being overwhelmed by the physical experience of the emotion.
-You may be better able to tolerate the discomfort of feeling out of control.
-You may learn to feel safe in your body in the present moment.
-You may find yourself ‘re-entering’ life with confidence instead of avoiding places and things that remind you of the hard parts of your story.
-You may learn how to recognize when your thoughts are leading you somewhere that you don’t want to go and learn how to change the way you think about struggles.
-You may have a better understanding of how to walk through/process future losses.
-You may be able to accept your own humanity—your strengths and your weaknesses, your limitations or capacity—and be able to verbalize what you want or need. And you may be better able to set limits on what you choose to allow into your life.
-You may find that while there are parts of your story that you would never want to repeat, there are other parts of your story which have shaped you in ways that you would not choose to change. (For example, you may have a new sense of purpose or identity because of your story. )
